Voice Clone Detector: Is This Really Their Voice?

Explains what voice cloning is, how voice clone detection helps when a familiar voice asks for money, and what to do after a check.

The call sounds exactly like your son, your mother or your manager. They are in trouble, it is urgent, and they need money now. This is the pattern of an AI voice clone scam. A voice clone detector cannot replace a phone call to the real person, but it can give you a second opinion in under a minute before you send anything.

What is voice cloning?

Voice cloning means training or prompting an AI model on samples of one particular person so it can speak new words in their voice. Generic text-to-speech produces a stock voice. A clone imitates someone you know, including their accent and the way they talk. Scammers collect samples from public videos, reels, voicemail greetings or earlier calls. They then script a crisis: an accident, an arrest, a hospital bill, a blocked bank account. For real-world patterns, read our guide to the AI voice cloning family emergency scam.

How to detect AI voice cloning

Your ears are a weak test, because a clone is designed to sound like someone you trust. Use several checks together:

  1. Pause the pressure. Scammers rely on urgency. Any real emergency can wait two minutes while you verify.
  2. Call back on a number you already know. Use the saved contact, not the number that called or messaged you.
  3. Ask for your family code wordor a question only the real person could answer.
  4. Run a voice clone detection check on the recording as one more signal.

What the voice clone detector tells you

  • Likely AI: the recording shows signs typical of synthetic or cloned speech. Do not send money or share codes until you have reached the real person another way.
  • Likely real: we found no strong signs of AI generation. This does not prove the speaker is who they say they are. Impersonators, edited clips and real people reading a script still exist.
  • Unsure: there was not enough evidence for a confident answer. Treat the message with the same caution as an unverified call.

The result is decision support, not proof.

Why phone audio and Indian languages matter

Clone scams often reach people over a phone line or WhatsApp, in Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Punjabi or a mix of an Indian language with English. Many general-purpose detectors are trained mostly on clean studio English, so they can struggle with this kind of audio. SpotAClone is built for phone-quality speech in Indian languages as well as English. It works for families in India and for relatives abroad in the US, UK, UAE and Singapore. Hindi readers can use the Hindi version.

Limits you should know

No voice clone detector is perfect. Very short clips, audio that has been forwarded and compressed many times, heavy background noise, and voices made with newer generators can all reduce reliability. Results may come back Unsure, and false results in either direction are possible.

If you think a clone was used on you

  • Never share an OTP, PIN or UPI PIN. Banks never ask for them.
  • Warn the person whose voice was copied so they can alert others.
  • In India, report at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930. In the US, report at reportfraud.ftc.gov. In the UK, contact Action Fraud. Elsewhere, contact your local police or national fraud reporting service.
  • Callers claiming to be bank staff are a related trick. See fake bank OTP calls with cloned voices.

Frequently asked questions

What is voice cloning?

Voice cloning is using AI to copy a specific person's voice so that it can say new sentences that person never said. A few seconds of real speech, for example from a social media video or an old voice note, can be enough to make a convincing copy.

How can I detect AI voice cloning myself?

Listen for flat emotion, odd pauses, no breathing, or a voice that avoids answering personal questions. But a good clone can fool the ear, so the reliable steps are to hang up and call back on a number you already know, ask for your family code word, and run the recording through a voice clone detector as an extra signal.

Can the detector tell me who is speaking?

No. SpotAClone looks for signs of AI generation. It does not identify speakers. A Likely real result means we found no strong signs of AI, not that the voice belongs to the person it claims to be.

Why did I get Unsure?

Short clips, heavy compression, background noise or a new type of voice generator can leave too little evidence for a confident answer. When that happens we say Unsure rather than guess. Verify through a second channel.

Is my recording saved?

No. Audio is analysed and deleted immediately and is never stored.
